Choirs can opt to stay for 3, 4, 5 nights
Leipzig is a city that flourished from the 16th century onwards. It has always enjoyed great economic and cultural success, although both were significantly stifled under the Communist regime after World War II. Music, in particular, has had a reputation for outstanding excellence with the likes of Bach,Wagner, Mendelssohn and Schumann all having lived and/or worked here at one time. Literary work also has flourished here and Germany's greatest poet, Goethe, set a fundamental scene of 'Faust' the Auerbach's Cellar here.
Performance opportunities
• A total of at least three performances and two workshops for each choir.
• Opportunities to perform in historic and quality venues throughout the city of Leipzig.
• Joint concert with another participating Festival choir.
• Two quality workshops with Artistic Director Jonathan Willcocks.
• Gala Finale Concert, to include massed choir performance of a Mendelssohn piece.
• Evening Welcome Reception for Choir Directors.
On day 2, choirs enjoy a Guided Walking Tour of Leipzig to see such sights as St Nicholas' Church and the St Thomas' Church, both with important connections to the composer Bach. The morning continues with a stop at the most aesthetically pleasing shopping centres in Europe. The remainder of the afternoon is free for independent sightseeing in Leipzig before participating in the Grand Opening Ceremony at the Mendelssohn Hall of the Gewandhaus in Leipzig.
On day 3, choirs have the opportunity visit one of the many musically themed museums in the city such asthe Mendelssohn House or the Museum of Musical Instruments. This afternoon, choirs attend a workshop with Artistic Director Jonathan Willcocks before performing in our evening concert.
On day 4, choirs have free time before attending an afternoon workshop with Artistic Director Jonathan Willcocks, before participation in an evening concert.
After breakfast on day 5, choirs have morning rehearsal at St Nicholas' Church with Artistic Director Jonathan Willcocks in preparation for the evening's closing concert. Choirs break in the early afternoon to allow for sightseeing and souvenir shopping. A second rehearsal for all Choirs will take place at St Nicholas' Church in the late afternoon before participating in the Closing Gala Concert.
