The city has played an important role in the development of German culture and nowadays plays host to world famous exhibitions and is a UNESCO's World Heritage sites. Great poets, composers and philosophers including Goethe, Schiller, Bach and Liszt have all left their mark on the town and everywhere you turn, you will find traces it's eventful history. In the late 18th and early 19th centuries,Weimar played an important role as an intellectual centre. The town's awareness of its history, both recent and more distant, has enabled it to realise its vision of a state-of-the-art cultural centre. As Goethe once asked, "Where else do you find so many good things in such a small place?"

THE INTERNATIONAL CHORAL FESTIVAL, WEIMAR

TheWeimar International Choral Festival is a 3-day event.Main performances take place in the "Goethe-Hall" in the "Goethe School" where choirs choose their own repertoire and are required to sing one or two songs from their home country. There is also an option to perform in a social institution such as a senior citizens home, where choirs perform either a 30 or 60 minute concert. In addition, there is a further opportunity to sing during a mass/church service in or aroundWeimar. The closing ceremony is performed in the Park Hotel where choirs join together to sing "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony.

During choirs stay inWeimar, there is the opportunity to take a tour to themedieval city of Erfurt, the Thuringian state capital, is a must. The imposing St. Mary's Cathedral, the church of St. Severus and the famous Merchants' Bridge in its medieval town centre still testify to the town's past wealth.
