TheWeimar International Choral Festival is a 3-day event.Main performances take place in the "Goethe-Hall" in the "Goethe School" where choirs choose their own repertoire and are required to sing one or two songs from their home country. There is also an option to perform in a social institution such as a senior citizens home, where choirs perform either a 30 or 60 minute concert. In addition, there is a further opportunity to sing during a mass/church service in or aroundWeimar. The closing ceremony is performed in the Park Hotel where choirs join together to sing "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony.
During choirs stay inWeimar, there is the opportunity to take a tour to themedieval city of Erfurt, the Thuringian state capital, is a must. Erfurt was an influential trading centre and university town in theMiddle Ages and today has extremely well preserved Renaissance and half-timbered buildings. The imposing St. Mary's Cathedral, the church of St. Severus and the famous Merchants' Bridge in its medieval town centre still testify to the town's past wealth.
There is also free time during the festival for choirs to visit the amazing selection of museums in Weimar. The city has about 40 different sites covering everything from the Stone Age to classicism to the modern art.
